Strengthening Food Safety Management Formally Implemented

Adopted at the 73^rd Routine Meeting of the Municipal People’s Government on April 3, 2010，signed by Mayor Han Zheng on April 15, and promulgated by Decree No. 33 of the Municipal People’s Government, the Announcement of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government on Food Safety Management is effective from the date of promulgation to December 31, 2010. The whole text of the Announcement has been made public on the following websites: www.shanghai.gov.cn, www. shanghailaw.gov.cn, and www.eastday.com, and will be published on Jiefang Daily.

To prevent the influence of unsafe food on this Municipality and ensure the smooth holding of World Expo, Shanghai, the Announcement provides that where certain food fails to meet the standards of or requirements for food safety upon testing, and might cause great harm to people’s health, the case shall be handled by relevant departments according to the State’s relevant provisions, and besides, food of the same kind from the same origin shall be restricted to enter this Municipality. The Announcement provides corresponding punishment for unit vegetable sellers failing to claim relevant certificates from the producers, or individual vegetable sellers failing to attach relevant certificates, or the act of using nitrites or such other food additives in violation of the national standard; defines severe punishment for the act of adding industrial salt or such other substances that may endanger people’s health to food; and increases punishment for the act of using or selling disused edible oil upon processing.
